How Much Does Citibike Cost?

NOTE #1: If you don’t have a US phone number, you either need a US eSIM or must use the payment kiosks at the Citi Bike stations.

NOTE #2: These prices are accurate as of March, 2026.

When it comes to Citi Bike, there are four main options:

  1. Pay per ride
  2. Day pass
  3. Citibike membership
  4. Lyft pink memberships

Pay per Ride Cost

  • $4.99 to unlock
  • First 30 minutes on a standard bike are free
    • After 30 minutes, $0.41/minute
  • eBike costs $0.41/minute

Use our referral link (you can’t have ever had a Lyft account) and get a free bike unlock!

For example, a 2-hour bike rental from a rental company starts around $18 but likely costs a bit more due to fees. This is possibly a better option, depending on your plans and how long you want to be on the bike and exploring.

Bike Rental Prices (estimates):

  • 1 hour – $8 + fees
  • 2 hours – $18 + fees
  • 3 hours – $25 + fees
  • 4 hours – $30 + fees

You will probably wait in line during busy times/days/holidays to get your bike!

Day Pass Cost

  • $25 for 24 hours of unlimited 30-minute standard bike rides
    • Unlocks are “free”
    • After 30 minutes, $0.41/minute
  • eBike costs $0.41/minute

Citi Bike Membership

  • $239/year
  • Free unlocks
  • Free standard bike rides up to 45 minutes
    • After 30 minutes, $0.27/minute
  • eBike costs $0.27/minute
  • Also gives you access to Bike Angels

The Citi Bike membership rarely makes sense, as the Lyft Pink Annual plan is cheaper and includes all the same perks + even more.

Lyft Pink Memberships

There are two Lyft Pink membership options. Neither is usually a good option for a weekend trip, but worth mentioning in case you come to NYC often and/or use Lyft frequently.

Lyft Pink Membership

  • $99/year or $9.99/month
  • 12 free bike or scooter unlocks a year on the annual plan, and only ONE free unlock on the monthly plan
    • First 30 minutes on a standard bike are free
    • After 30 minutes, $0.41/minute
    • eBike costs $0.41/minute
  • Also gives you access to:
    • Bike Angels
    • Grubhub+ Membership
    • Deeper Lyft discounts (5% off all Lyft rides)

Lyft Pink All Access Membership

  • $199/year
  • Free unlocks
  • Free standard bike rides up to 45 minutes
    • After 30 minutes, $0.27/minute
  • eBike costs $0.27/minute
  • Also gives you access to:
    • Bike Angels
    • Grubhub+ Membership
    • Deeper Lyft discounts (5% off all Lyft Rides & 10% off Black cars)
    • 5 free unlocks for guests

If you have a travel credit card, check whether it offers any perks for Lyft. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve used to give a free Lyft Pink membership.

How to Use Citi Bike

Using Citi Bike requires a US phone number. If you don’t have that, you either need a US eSIM or use the payment kiosks at Citi Bike stations.

How to Unlock a Citi Bike

Unlocking a Citi Bike is relatively easy once you have the app set up and connected to a payment method.

  • Use the Citi Bike or Lyft app
  • Buy a day pass or unlock code via their website
  • Buy a day pass at the station kiosk
  • Scan the QR code on the bike with your phone. If that doesn’t work, you can manually enter the bike’s number

Pre-Ride Check

Before I ride, and ideally beforeyou even unlock, I like to do a pre-ride check to ensure a smooth trip.

  • Adjust the seat height
  • Check the brakes to ensure they work
  • Verify there is a strap, if you are gonna need it
  • At night, verify that the light turns on once you unlock

Tips for Safe Biking in NYC

Let’s be clear, biking in large cities represents inherent risk. Some pedestrians, cars, and other bicyclists may be reckless or distracted, even if you are riding safely.

With that being said, here are some tips for biking safely in New York City:

  • Opt for bike lanes when possible
  • Ride with the traffic direction
  • Central Park and the Hudson River Parkway are the safest bike areas in Manhattan
  • Overuse your bell; people are often unaware of bikes. Don’t expect people to stop
  • Just cause someone else on a bike is going at a light or stop, doesn’t mean you should be
  • Gloves and a beanie are vital if it’s chilly outside, as you’re always colder on a bike than when walking

Citi Bike NYC Recap & Next Steps

Citi Bike has, unfortunately, gotten quite expensive in recent years. With that said, a $4.99 unlock for a ride under 30 minutes can be an affordable and convenient option throughout the city.

If you plan to ride frequently, Lyft Pink’s yearly plan is by far the best option for perks and cheaper rides.
