Cooper Stock Way: 97th & West End
Our first NYC honorary street marks a tragedy, but it did change laws for negligent drivers in New York City.
In 2014, 9-year-old Cooper Stock was struck and killed by a negligent taxi driver who didn’t yield. It happened right here at 97th & West End Avenue.
His tragic death prompted new legislation that allows, pending an investigation, for suspension or revocation of a TLC license if a driver kills or maims someone as a result of failure to yield.
Cooper’s mother has continually advocated for safer streets and set up a non-profit in Cooper’s name that funds a variety of programs, including basketball camps in NYC.
One of Cooper’s favorite songs was Snow (Hey Oh) by Red Hot Chili Peppers, which you’ll hear playing in this video.

Cooper Stock Way Recap & Next Steps
During my research, I found that 90% of pedestrians survive crashes at 20 miles per hour, and drivers are much more likely to drive at safe speeds if streets are designed to maximize safety.
