Ariel Russo Place: 97th between Broadway & Amsterdam

The time between a 911 call and an ambulance arriving can mean life or death.

Sadly, in 2013, four-year-old Ariel Russo was struck an unlicensed teen driver and didn’t survive. Her mother believed faster response times could have saved her.

Similar to Cooper’s story from street #1 of our series, Ariel’s death led to a new law requiring fire departments to track complete response times – starting from the 911 call, not just dispatch.

Ariel is now memorialized on 97th Street between Amsterdam & Broadway, the site of her tragic death.

Ariel Russo was 4 years old when she was killed on a sidewalk in June 2013 when an unlicensed teen driver in an SUV jumped the curb while fleeing from the police and struck her. Records indicated a 4-minute delay between the time EMS received the 9-1-1 call and the time an ambulance was dispatched. While it did lead to improved dispatch reporting laws that provide better data to get ambulances to where they should be, most efficiently, the family contested the shortened/early release jail time for the driver. I cannot imagine the pain this family went through, it’s heartbreaking. She was walking with her grandmother when the accident happened. Ariel Russo Place Recap & Next Steps

These first two honorary streets are heartbreaking, but it’s important to learn about 2,000+.. not just the famous ones.

The next honorary street is much more positive, though.
