Monnie Callan Way: 96th & Columbus

Monnie Callan, #3 on our Honorary Street Names, was an Upper West Side community organizer and medical social worker for nearly 20 years. She was on one of NYC’s first teams supporting HIV/AIDS patients in the 1980s and fought for tenant rights, union efforts, and healthcare for seniors.

She’s honored here at 96th St & Columbus Avenue.

Here’s what she said when interviewed at age 90:

“People who are wealthy can’t imagine what working people may suffer… and they often don’t care. Unions are the only way that workers can get what they need from the bosses.”

I’m on Team Monnie!

As long-time lovers of New York City we made the plunge to move across the country to NYC in early 2021... with our 3 dogs at the time (RIP Buddy). We consider ourself experts in exploring new restaurants, finding the best-rated bars, and activities actually worth doing. Plus, my Google Maps organizational skills are 2nd to none. 😜
