1- Walk the High Line

The High Line is an old, elevated rail line that was refurbished into a beautiful above-ground green space and park. It cuts through the heart of Chelsea, and it is well worth visiting, even if only for a small portion of it.

We love the High Line for a romantic activity due to the time you get to discuss the surrounding architecture, have walking conversations, and catch some amazing views along the way.

In the summers, you’ll also find food and drink venues along the way. We recommend starting at the 12th Street entrance near The Whitney, but you can enter at multiple spots.

2- Restaurant Hop for a Three-Course Meal

The beauty of a night out in New York City is the sheer number of options available to you. So, instead of limiting yourself to one restaurant, try 2-3 different ones in a neighborhood for a complete meal.

Start at restaurant one for an appetizer to share and maybe a drink.

Head to restaurant two for the main course.

Then hop over to a third restaurant (or ice cream shop, for example) for your dessert course.

Not only is exploring different menus a fun activity, but it also makes the game of where-in-the-world-should-we-eat-tonight much, much easier because you aren’t forced to choose only one place.

3- Do a Cooking or Cocktail-Making Class

Creative activities are very fun and romantic. You get time to converse with your date AND see them in a scenario that might be a bit out of their comfort zone.

Some cooking and cocktail classes we’ve enjoyed in NYC include:

4- Visit a Rooftop Bar

Rooftop bars are the peak of the NYC romantic experience. Tasty cocktails, unbeatable views, and romantic ambiance make it the perfect romantic thing to do, especially for Valentine’s Day.

Some popular rooftop bars include:

  • Manhatta
  • 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar
  • Glass Ceiling Rooftop
  • Overstory
  • Dear Irving Midtown
  • Bar at One World Observatory (or any observation deck)

Know that you often pay a premium for a rooftop bar, but in many instances, it’s worth it!

5- Art Classes

Similar to cooking classes, art classes make for a great romantic activity. They are often low-stress and give you and your date the chance to see each other’s unique personalities.

Paint’n Pour has multiple locations throughout the city. We really enjoyed our class there.

We’ve also had success checking places like Eventbrite for upcoming art classes, including the one we did on top of One World Trade Center.

Here are some other options throughout the city. 👇

6- Picnic in Central Park (or Any NYC Park)

While we have an entire article dedicated to the best Central Park picnic spots, know that the entire park is the perfect spot for a romantic meal.

There are green spaces everywhere, and just about any of them will be a great place to have a picnic. Having a picnic on a nice sunny day is one of our favorite romantic things to do in Central Park (or just for fun, romanticism is not necessary).

Here are the 5 best Central Park picnic spots:

  1. Cherry Hill
  2. Sheep Meadow
  3. The Great Lawn
  4. The Ramble
  5. East Meadow

If you want it to be romantic, don’t make your partner do all the planning and shopping. Surprise them with a ready-to-go experience!

If you’re going in the fall, double your experience with some fall foliage.

7- Date Night at The Met

While any outing to The Met can be enjoyable, Date Night at The Met is a particularly romantic thing to do in New York City!

Every Friday and Saturday from 5-9pm, The Met stays open late with live music, fun activities, and two-for-one drink specials in its cafes.

Use it as an excuse to dress up, stroll through iconic art galleries, and get to know your date. Remember, The Met is pay-as-you-wish for NY residents, so this can even be a free date idea. 🙌

8- Watch a Sunset at Pier 57

The sunsets at Pier 57 are breathtaking.

You can bring your own snacks and drinks up to the free-to-access public park, or snag a bite from the Pier 57 Food Hall on the main level.

We’ve spent hours up at this park taking in the views, chatting, and enjoying each other’s company. Truly a wonderful (and free) romantic activity in the city.

9- Explore a New Museum (Morgan Library, Met Cloisters, Museum at Eldridge Street, etc.)

While the popular museums live up to the hype, there are some truly underrated NYC museums worth checking out.

As for a romantic option? You can’t beat The Met Cloisters.

You’ll be transported into what feels like a different world. Quiet, serene, and rich with history.

Be sure to check out the massive unicorn tapestries!

You can also consider tours of The Met, guided architecture walking tours (a museum in itself), or any of the other amazing NYC museums.

10- Conservatory Garden in Central Park

If we had to pick one of our favorite romantic activities in New York City, it would be the Conservatory Garden. It is truly a Central Park hidden gem (overused phrase, I know).

It boasts three different style areas. The center Italianate Garden, the French-style North Garden, and the English-style South Garden. The North Garden recently underwent an extensive renovation, too.

You’ll find massive fountains, squirrel-shaped shrubbery, a wide variety of flowers and plants, and, of course, public bathrooms (this matters).

It just might be the most romantic thing to do in Central Park, honestly!

11- A Couple’s Photoshoot

This wasn’t a professional photoshoot, just giving you a taste of the amazing views available for photoshoot backdrops

New York City is full of iconic views, and capturing those moments with a couple’s photoshoot is a great way to preserve those memories forever!

While selfie photos are always a viable option, a professional photoshoot can make all the difference. Personally, this is a very romantic activity while you are in the city.

12- Free Art Galleries in Chelsea

With over 200 art galleries in Chelsea, it’s the perfect free alternative to NYC museums and a very easy, yet romantic activity.

Between 10th & 11th Avenues, you’ll find loads of free-to-explore art galleries.

Use the free See Saw app (only on iOS) to find galleries to visit. It shows information and hours for art galleries throughout the city, including Chelsea.

13- Day Spa or Couples Massage for a Relaxing Vibe

Nothing says romantic activity like a couples massage. Luckily, you can find options for this at almost any price point.

For cheaper options, there are loads of foot spas and reflexology places throughout the city.

Or for more expensive, luxurious options, people prefer Bathhouse and other day spas near Korea Street.

14- An Evening of Jazz

A couple of years ago, we spent Valentine’s evening at Smalls Jazz Club and had a phenomenal experience. The music was amazing, the food and drinks were tasty, and the vibes were perfect.

There is something special about jazz, especially when looking for something romantic to do!

New York City is full of jazz clubs and live music, but here are some popular ones:

Know that some of these jazz clubs are more first-come, first-served seating, while others require a reservation.
